Kalerwe market in the evening

Kalerwe market is one of Uganda's largest markets and sits just below the Northern Bypass highway (the bypass opened in 2009 as an alternate route to get across the city without entering the city centre, relieving traffic). Recently, it was announced that road expansions in the area would require a part of the market to be relocated; see my previous post here: https://topographyoftrade.wixsite.com/kampala/single-post/2017/06/02/Markets-in-the-papers.

Kalerwe marketis a point of arrival for fresh food coming into Kampala from all over the country. It is well known that it is one of the most affordable places to buy fresh food. I visited this evening to buy some fruits and was fascinated by the various activities going on. There are a few items, besides food,

that are sold in this market, including: clothing, bed sheeting and other household items.

I was particularly interested in the relationship between the market and the street : the sidewalk was filled with vendors selling fruit and veg in separate spaces; a drive way between the sidewalk and the market boundary was shared between all modes of transport entering and exiting the market. Within the market boundaries, various stalls and spaces were closing down or already shut (about 6pm) but this contrasted with the busy and active street front.
