National Theatre to become a shopping mall

Recently, I read a news article stating that the National Theatre was to be demolished for a shopping mall, a few days later, the same news agency posted another story saying that the Theatre was not going to be demolished. For years, the National Theatre has been a target for development alongside growing concern that the efforts to re-develop overlook the historical and cultural importance of the building in the city. Like the National Museum, it is one of Kampala's few remaining historical buildings (designed before 1969). It hosts various events in Kampala supporting and promoting cultural activities in the city. As more commercial developments emerge in Kampala's central zone, it becomes important to question the extent to which urban development projects can acknowledge and consider significant historical practices, cultures and spaces in the city.
